Bobby Fischer
1943–2008
The greatest chess player of all time.
Robert James Fischer revolutionized chess with his uncompromising approach to the game, his brilliant innovations, and his dramatic 1972 World Championship victory over Boris Spassky—a match that transcended sport and became a pivotal moment in Cold War history.
At just 13, Fischer stunned the chess world with the "Game of the Century." By 15, he became the youngest grandmaster in history. At 29, he defeated the Soviet chess machine to become World Champion—ending 24 years of Soviet dominance and becoming an American hero in the process.
Fischer's influence extends far beyond his games. He fought for chess players to be treated as professionals, invented Chess960 to keep the game fresh, and inspired generations of players including Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen. Fischer's book My 60 Memorable Games remains one of the greatest chess books ever written.

"Chess is life." — Bobby Fischer
